Castro is a world expert in the plasma spraying of beryllium alloys.
A Technical Staff Member in the Materials Technology Group at
Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), he established one of the
only facilities in the world capable of performing beryllium plasma
spray research. There he directs research initiatives, developing
beryllium plasma spray technology for the International Thermonuclear
Experimental Reactor, for lightweight support structures on NASA
space telescopes, for the US nuclear weapons program, and for
high temperature coating and structural applications on future
tactical strike fighters. Richard is the recipient of numerous
awards for excellence He is an active member of the LANL Hispanic
Diversity Working Group Educational and Outreach Committee, mentoring
