FAQs About Volunteering at the National Atomic Museum

What is the Museum’s mission?
The mission of the National Atomic Museum is to serve as America’s museum resource for nuclear history and science. The Museum presents exhibits and quality educational programs that convey the diversity of individuals and events that shape the historical and technical context of the nuclear age.

How do I get involved?

What will I be doing?
Click here for Volunteer Opportunities. Volunteers are placed according to their skills, interests, and current museum needs.

Where is the Museum located?
The Museum is located at near Albuquerque Old Town, at 1905 Mountain Road NW. For further directions, click here.

Do I need experience?
Experience is not a prerequisite for a volunteer position at the Museum. Whenever necessary and feasible, training and mentoring are provided.

What are the benefits of volunteering at the Museum?
1. Learn the nuts and bolts about how museums work.
2. Work with a highly motivated staff that enjoys volunteers and respect experience and maturity.
3. Peer volunteers with educational, scientific, technical, engineering and military backgrounds.
4. Learn basic computer skills and or keep your computer skills honed.

6. Receive a museum newsletter quarterly.

When will I be volunteering?
Hours vary according to the needs of the Museum and the scheduling preferences of the volunteer. The Museum is open 7 days a week, 9 am to 5 pm with the exceptions of New Years Day, Easter, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas. Occasionally volunteers are needed for evening events or functions.

For whom will I be working?
Volunteers are paired with staff members in their field of interest.

Will training be provided?
Each volunteer receives a volunteer handbook and an orientation. Training and mentoring for specific placement is provided.

What is the minimum time requirement?
Time required is dependent upon specific job placement. There is no minimum number of hours required.

Is there an age requirement?
The age requirement is 14 years of age to….. (Well how long can you last?)
